Lotus Sutra Teachings and Translation
By far the most pervasive aspect of the Tendai School is its devotion and attention to the ideals of the Lotus Sutra (HOKKE KYO) as transmitted from China. Both the Founder of Chinese T'ien-ta'i and the successive Founder of Japanese Tendai relied heavily on the Lotus Sutra in promulgating their theories on the Supreme Awakening for all sentient beings.
The Japanese Tendai Sect propelled the Lotus Teachings higher, integrating them with three other components to form what would later be referred to as the Original Awakening theory (TENDAI HONGAKU RON). These three additional components were:
(1) Maha Shikan meditative theory,
(2) Nembutsu homage prayers unto Amidha Buddha, and
(3) Pure Land doctrines.
Through the implementation of these aspects, an eclectic, unified Buddhist theory of Awakening, centered and supported by Lotus Teachings had been fashioned.
